Sanborn Typography: Inspirations

As a history major, I have had some experience working with the Sanborn Fire Insurance maps, an amazingly detailed collection of maps detailing town and building information across the United States for assessing fire insurance liability. What I had never paid much attention to in my perusal of digital editions is the intricate and diverse typography that embellishes the maps.
