Shard of Glass: Inspirations

Renzo Piano's "The Shard", London

On an architecture blog I frequent, The Shard, a crisp, glass skyscraper designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano (those in Chicago admire him for the wonderful modern wing at the Art Institute) is featured; the post illuminates readers on the progress of the modern addition to the city's skyline. I know I've mentioned my affinity for Hugh Newell Jacobsen and Robert A.M. Stern, but few architects have mastered modern elegance like Piano. His buildings aren't grossly abstract or monstrously overpowering; instead they are humanistic and understandable. He creates spaces that are light and fulfilling, ones that frame the purpose of the building by acting as an elegant backdrop.
