Melding Historical and Contemporary: Inspirations

Originally built in 1910, this Pacific Heights home recently underwent an interior remodel, an exterior revamp, and a penthouse addition, all of which had to comply with the historicizing planning mandate of the neighborhood. The result is outstanding. The ascetic nature of the grey facade appears crisp and modern and fits nicely with the neighboring homes, barely hinting at the intriguingly unique composition of the rest of the house. The house is governed by both traditional and disrupted geometric forms that appear as rooms shaped out of wood and then wrapped in stone, steel, tile, and glass. The interplay of historical and contemporary, traditional and unconventional, coupled with the mixing of materials creates a pleasingly modern house that respects its early 20th century roots.
